2009110211-02-2009 : MMCAP recently issued an RFP for influenza vaccine for the 2010-2011 influenza season. 2009100810-08-2009 : Re: FluLaval Shortage -- Fluvirin Available as Substitute Today, ASD Healthcare contacted MMCAP stating it will not be able to fulfill members’ prebooked doses of GSK’s FluLaval. The shortage is caused by GSK’s reduced production of seasonal flu vaccine; of the 28 million doses GSK promised to produce it will be coming to market with only 10 – 12 million doses. ASD has been contacting members that prebooked FluLaval to offer an alternate product. While all doses of MMCAP’s other contracted products have been prebooked for quite some time, ASD was able to procure additional product from Novartis Vaccines. ASD will be able to provide Novartis Fluvirin at a price of $99/multidose vial (price includes FET) which will be supplied by month’s end. The cost is twice as much as the prebooked vaccine, but MMCAP has contacted Novartis directly to ask for a price reduction. If a lower price becomes available MMCAP will send notice to State Contacts. Please note that this quantity of vaccine is only available to members that prebooked FluLaval; it is not available for late season orders. MMCAP will forward all updates as information becomes available. Please contact ASD ((800) 746-6273) if you have any questions.
2009081408-14-2009 : MMCAP H1N1 Update…Released - 8/13/09 Two weeks ago, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended the H1N1 vaccine be made available first to pregnant women, who are at higher risk for flu-related complications; people ages 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma or diabetes; and children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years, a population that has experienced high rates of flu-related illness. Health care workers and emergency medical personnel are also recommended for early vaccination, as they would be needed on the job -- not out sick -- in the event of widespread illness. Once there is enough vaccine for vaccination of other groups the ACIP has suggested that healthy persons between 25-64 years of age be vaccinated next. People 65 and over, who are normally the first to get seasonal influenza vaccine, would be last to receive the new H1N1 vaccination due to low reports of infection in this population. The first batches of swine flu vaccine are not expected to become available until mid-October, assuming studies indicate it is safe and effective. The first vaccinations in study groups in the US were conducted earlier this week. - Officials have yet to answer many key questions, including how many doses will be needed or how long after the shots before vaccinated people are fully protected. MMCAP has been in contact with the CDC in reference to assisting in anyway possible for the relay of information and/or distribution of the H1N1 vaccine. - The CDC is expanding its existing VFC contract with McKesson to include centralized distribution of the H1N1 flu vaccine. - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the CDC are working with state and local public health officials and vaccine manufacturers to develop the timeline and plan for distribution and administration of the H1N1 flu vaccine to the public. - McKesson’s role will be to distribute the vaccine to sites designated by state health departments across the country. Each state will designate the providers who will receive and administer the vaccine. NOTE: At this point MMCAP is not aware of a contact person or phone number with McKesson for distribution for H1N1 vaccine, as all of this information is conveyed through the CDC. Pricing for the H1N1 vaccine has not been released. H1N1 vaccine will not be a contracted product through MMCAP or any other GPO. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PREPARE NOW! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Antiviral medications used in the treatment of the flu can be obtained on contract through MMCAP’s Contracted Pharmaceutical Wholesalers. 2009040604-06-2009 : FFF Is Pleased to be an Authorized MMCAP Distributor for the Talecris Line of Hyper immune Products Choose an RHo(D) Based on Product Comparisons. For safe and effective prevention of Rh hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), consider HyperRHO® S/D, RhO(D)* Immune Globulin (Human), based on the differences shown by a comparison of available RhO(D) products. In Rh hemolytic disease of the newborn, HyperRHO® S/D is the only Rho(D) with FDA labeling for removal of pathogenic prions that may cause TSE† disease in humans. *Rho(D)=Rhesus D antigen †TSE = Human TSEs (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy’s) are a group of neurodegenerative diseases related to mad cow disease Unmet Needs in Post-exposure Prophylaxis for Tetanus: From 1947 to 2000, the incidence of reported cases of tetanus declined from 3.9 to 0.16 cases per million in the US.2 But despite widespread availability of a safe, effective tetanus vaccine, new cases continue to be reported.3 Tetanus is significantly linked to age and ethnicity: • Approximately 95% of US children received 3 doses of tetanus toxics by 19-35 months of age.4 However, among adults adherence to the recommendation for decennial tetanus toxic booster is considerably lower, varying inversely with increasing age.5 • Tetanus is primarily a disease of older adults. From 1987 to 1988, 68% of all U.S. tetanus patients with complete information were over 50 years of age.6 From 1998 to 2000, the highest incidence of tetanus and tetanus-related deaths were in adults over age 60.2 o Population-based data (1988-1994) showed the prevalence of immunity to tetanus went down with age. By age 60, 50% of the sample did not have protective antibody levels.7 • CDC surveillance data (1998-2000) showed the incidence of reported tetanus among Hispanics was nearly 3 times that of non-Hispanic whites (.38 cases per million [36 cases] vs. 0.13 cases per million [78 cases]).2
